Kolkata Suspends 40 Eatery Licences. Does a food influencer’s responsibility end at MUST TRY?

You send a restaurant reel to the family WhatsApp group and someone suggests Sunday lunch. Someone else asks whether there is parking and just like that the creator’s recommendation has become a plan.

Now imagine that, before Sunday arrives, the restaurant’s food licence is suspended. Would you want the influencer who recommended it to tell you?

That is the conversation Kolkata’s recent food-safety action opens up for food creators.

On September 8, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation suspended the food licences of 40 eateries. The establishments named in reports included Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick and Don Giovannis on Park Street. Officials reported refrigeration and sanitation failures, infestations and fungal contamination across the inspection drive. They also said affected establishments could seek to reopen after addressing the problems and passing reinspection.

For anyone whose saved posts are also their weekend food guide, such news can raise an uncomfortable question. How much confidence should we place in a must-try recommendation?

Food creators have plenty worth protecting here. A thoughtful recommendation can introduce us to a neighbourhood we have never explored, explain a dish we have never ordered and give a small business an audience it could struggle to reach otherwise. The personal voice is part of the appeal. We return because we begin to understand someone’s taste.

But if every restaurant is the best and every dish is something you can’t miss, how do followers decide what’s actually worth trying? Tell us what stood out, what you’d order again and whether it was worth the money. Creators can be enthusiastic while still giving followers an honest picture of the experience.

There also has to be room for circumstances to change.

A creator can describe an excellent meal without knowing what happens in a restaurant’s cold storage. A visit captures an experience at a particular time. Holding someone responsible for everything subsequently discovered on those premises would be unfair. Kolkata’s enforcement action does not, by itself, establish misconduct by any influencer who previously featured an affected business.

What creators can choose is how they respond when credible information reaches them.

If verified action affects the very outlet they recommended, a dated caption update or pinned comment can help followers make a more informed decision. It can explain what has changed, link to the information and distinguish that development from the original visit. There is no need for a dramatic apology for something the creator could not have known.

An update can simply say: this was my experience then; here is something relevant to your decision now.

That kind of openness deserves encouragement. A creator willing to revisit a recommendation gives followers a reason to keep listening. If every correction is treated as an admission of dishonesty, we make candour harder than it needs to be. Audiences can help by sharing reliable information and giving creators space to respond.

Brands and restaurant partners have a part to play, too. Where a collaboration exists, communication can continue beyond the campaign report. If an outlet faces an operational restriction, informing the creator helps them answer questions accurately. The same applies when the issue is resolved. A partnership built around credibility benefits from making those conversations easy.

Fairness matters on the way back as well. If an affected restaurant receives clearance to reopen, that verified development deserves acknowledgment. An old warning can become incomplete just as an old recommendation can. Care with dates, branches and the status of an order protects both diners and businesses.

This incident is a useful opportunity to encourage a shared approach to trust. Creators bring an honest account of their experience. Brands keep them informed. Followers have space to ask questions. Clear disclosures and useful updates help everyone understand what they are seeing and decide for themselves.

The opportunity for food creators is to make their judgment worth returning to, long after the first recommendation. Sometimes that means finding an extraordinary meal. Sometimes it means adding a small, helpful update to an old post.
